JC's Homemade Sweet Potato Fries

Softer than store-bought fries and a lot cleaner. Fries feel more satisfying than a whole baked sweet potato, even when the ingredients are the same. Pair these with my Intestinal Broom Salad.

Method

  1. 1

Equipment: oven, baking sheet, unbleached parchment paper, cutting board, knife, mixing bowl.

  2. 2

Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C).

  3. 3

Prepare the baking sheet: Line a baking sheet with unbleached parchment paper.

  4. 4

Cut the sweet potato: Cut the sweet potato into fries approximately ½ to 1 cm thick. Aim for uniform thickness so they cook evenly. If any pieces are too thick, slice them lengthwise to match the others.

  5. 5

Oil the fries: Place the cut sweet potato pieces into a mixing bowl. Add about 1 tablespoon of olive oil and mix thoroughly so all pieces are lightly coated.

  6. 6

Arrange for baking: Spread the fries evenly on the baking sheet. Leave a small amount of space between each piece. Avoid overlapping or touching to promote even baking.

  7. 7

Bake: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake until cooked through and lightly crisped. Baking time will vary slightly depending on thickness, so monitor closely to avoid burning.

  8. 8

Season (optional): Add any seasonings after baking, if desired. This helps prevent spices from burning during the bake. Good ones: garlic powder, smoked paprika, onion powder, dried rosemary, black pepper, white salicornia salt.

  9. 9

Serve: Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Good to know
  • Thinner fries cook more evenly; overly thick wedges may brown on the outside before cooking through.
  • These homemade fries will be softer and not crispy compared to store-bought versions that use batters or coatings, but they are significantly cleaner.
  • For convenience, clean store-bought sweet potato chips (sweet potato, avocado oil, sea salt only) can be used as a swap.
